Abstract

As social justice advocates, multiculturalism appreciation and engagement in self-care are important components of professionalism (Roysircar, 2009). In a study of nearly 500 licensed psychologists, the impact of a psychologist’s diversity appreciation was explored in relation to a number of personal (self-care engagement) and professional (lifelong learning engagement and professional competence) variables. Results from multivariate general linear modeling suggest that stronger levels of diversity appreciation were related to stronger investments in lifelong learning (F(1,43)=2.44, r2=.26), professional competence (F(1,43)=2.85, r2=.29), and self-care engagement (F(1,43)=2.35, r2=.25), p<.001. Implications for professional competence will be explored in support of evidence-based approaches to multicultural trainings.
