Abstract

Gretchen Schuele, one of the Sheppards' neighbors, stated that she had been out with her brother (Karl Jr.), her brother's girlfriend, and friend Jack Karcher until about 2am on July 4. She did not notice any lights on in the Sheppard home when she arrived home. She did not hear about the murder until about 7am when Mayor Houk and Chief Eaton came to their door. She, her father (Karl), and brother went down to the beach to look for footprints, but found only dog prints. She mentioned that on their way home the night before, she heard a scream when they were driving through the park but that her brother made fun of her when she spoke of it.
