In Ohio Supreme Court Case No. 34615, Sam Sheppard appealed the Eighth District Court of Appeals decision in Case No. 23400. That case was a direct appeal of his conviction and raised issues concerning change of venue, motion for continuance, publicity, sufficiency of evidence, conduct of the trial, errors in jury instructions, errors in jury empaneling, and errors in evidentiary rulings. The Ohio Supreme court reviewed the asserted errors and affirmed Sheppard's conviction, with two judges dissenting.

In Ohio Supreme Court Case No. 34616, Sheppard appealed the Eighth District Court of Appeals decision in Case No. 23551. In that case, Sam Sheppard asserted that he should be granted a new trial based on newly discovered evidence, namely the forensic investigation of Dr. Paul Kirk. The Ohio Supreme Court dismissed this case, finding no debatable constitutional question was involved.

Sheppard filed a direct appeal of his conviction to the United States Supreme Court (United State Supreme Court Docket Number 352). The Supreme Court denied certiorari and declined to hear the case.

Several years later, Sheppard filed a petition for writ of habeas corpus with the Ohio Supreme Court in Case No. 35777. The Court dismissed the petition for a writ of habeas corpus.
