Code,920014, Subject,John Grabowski, Date,4/28/2008, Interviewer,James Calder, Abstract,"Dr. John Grabowski, professor of history at Case Western Reserve University, and historian at Western Reserve Historical Society, details the changes that have occurred in the University Circle since his undergraduate days in the late 1960’s; the rise of the medical centers, new housing and the new immigration to the area. As a history major at Western Reserve University in 1969, he describes life as a commuter student during the late 1960's and early 1970's, including anti-war activities, and the impact of the Glenville riots. Grabowski discusses some problems that still affect University Circle, early anti-Italian feelings, conflicts between African-Americans and the Italian community, as well as town and gown problems between CWRU and Little Italy. Grabowski praises nationwide and local efforts to incorporate African-American and immigrant culture into museum exhibits He stresses the importance of partnering with the African-American community and immigrant groups in this effort, but admits segregation is a problem in Cleveland. He provides historic information regarding the vibrant entertainment venues that existed near East 105th and Euclid, and in the Cedar-Central neighborhood, and reflects on reasons for the decline of those areas. Other topics include opportunities in research using digitized images and the future of virtual museum exhibits.", Special Notes,History Professor at CWRU and Historian at WRHS, minutes:,, 0,Introduction, 1,Growing up in Southeast Cleveland, 2,"First time at University Circle, Lagoon", 3,High School programs brought to UC, 4,Programs sponsored by Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, 5,"Reasons for coming to UC, Musical and Cultural programs today", 6,memories being on Case Campus, 7,"41 Years at CWRU, façade of campus", 8,organizations expanding UC community, 9,"Reason for growth of UC, health care industry", 10,Immigration and Migration at CWRU, 11,Sept 1967 Case and Western Reserved merged, 12,"History major, first time at WR Historical society, library page", 13,Encyclopedia of Cleveland History project, 14,"Staying in the area, CWRU", 15,"College life, lived at home, commuters club", 16,Anti-Vietnam protest on Euclid Ave., 17,"Drafted, medical excuse graduate school", 18,Glenville, 19,"Race in University Circle, UCI, UC Image", 20,Borderlands, 21,"Borderland issues, Cleveland Heights", 22,Discrimination against Italians, 23,Italian and African America conflict, 24,CWRU protest against racial discrimination, 25,"communities morphing, Spencer Crew", 26,African American community and culture in UC, 27,, 28,, 29,, 30,Symbolism in communities, 31,"Anglo-terms, Cedar Avenue 1920-1960s, Cleveland's version of Harlem", 32,"Cedar Avenue, Black Cleveland", 33,105th and Euclid 1950s and 1960s jumping place, 34,"105th served as second downtown, changed by automobile and fear", 35,"Winston Willace, Concentration of African American communities", 36,"Institutional Advancement, Medical communities", 37,"Institutional advancement, blighted neighborhoods", 38,Need Neighborhood that supports the institutions, 39,"Housing in Glenville, Church Square Housing Development, Urban homesteads", 40,African Americans more segregated, 41,"Integration of communities, mixed areas", 42,"Mount Pleasant area, black suburban communities", 43,Questions of ethnic purity, 44,Segregation, 45,Cultural Gardens as part of UC, 46,Cultural Gardens Walk and Roll, 47,Institutions consciously preserve multicultural heritage, 48,"Role of technology, historian of immigrant groups", 49,Immigrant Archives, 50,preservation and digitization, 51,player in digital world, 52,non-textual material, 53,"Building ""second life"" as tool", 54,Desire to be an International Center, 55,, 56,, 57,, 58,, 59,, 60,, 61,, 62,, 63,, 64,, 65,, 66,, 67,, 68,, 69,, 70,, 71,, 72,, 73,, 74,, 75,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,,
