The Collection began in 1981 with the establishment of a permanent endowment at the university funded by Mildred Putnam and her son Peter Putnam. In this 2009 interview, Buchanan discusses the creation of the endowment and his experiences as Director of the Putnam Collection. In addition, he describes several of the collection's pieces in detail and provides some biographical information on Peter Putnam."
