He has worked at the Market since he was a teenager and in this interview describes some of the experiences that he has had at the Market, what his opinions about the current state of the Market and surrounding Ohio City neighborhood along with what he feels the future holds for both. That is what they did over there in the old country. 1,Market was bustling at the time. Grandfather passed in 1956. Grandmother died in the 1960s. Uncle carried it on. Tony was brought into it to be showed how to work. Worked for a guy next to them for a summer. 2,Bought his own stand after working there for 6 years. Father's side was 1910 when they came over from Italy. Mother's side was around the same time. 3,"At the time the Market was an old world type of place. ""It made people feel at home."" It is still kind of that way. The flow of immigrants has changed this." 4,Other factors have changed the West Side Market including the advent of the grocery store. The rail system also changed this along with refrigeration. 5,Cleveland is a central hub due to its location in the midwest and Great Lakes region. Supply of water of the city. 6,Proximity of the lake is more of a benefit to recreation. Beyond being a distribution point the lake doesn't provide much for the Market. Has always lived in Cleveland area. 7,People from the old country congregated and stayed and eventually moved to the suburbs. There was a time when the market was a seasonal thing. Closed for three months. 8,"Rent based on a 9 month year. Things called ""salamanders"" that were used to heat the place. He was a city kid, had a furnace and didn't have to shovel coal. Meat was a more interesting venture." 9,Worked 65 hours a week when he was 13-14. Earned $35. It really wasn't a lot of money. Learned a lot about working from this boss. 10,Earned $1.25 an hour when he moved inside. Worked for a man named Walter Ernfelt and learned a trade. Opened a store in Parma in 1995. West Side Market issues contracts that allows you to sell certain things. 11,"His stand allows him to sell fresh pork. At the store in Parma he can sell anything. All the things sold in traditional butcher shops. ""Market has been a cyclical thing over the years.""" 12,Adament about the rent. Its fine to pay rent at peaks but not when in a lull. Want to keep things cheap so people come here instead of the gracery store. 13,Competition of the market makes the effort and quality better. First are guys you would have a beer with. The next is people you are friendly with but not like the first. 18,Third group is the guys you see in the hallway that you will say hey to. Proximity to the market isn't important. 35,Talks about the neighborhood. All for the breweries and restraunts that are here. Makes people want to come. 36,Doesn't want other establishments to take thier eye off of what the neighborhood is and that is the Market. 37,"Market will still be here a long time if others don't do major things to hurt it. Owner is not going to be there 70 hours a week. People want the Market open just so they can wander around and show thier friends. 41,The core of the Market are the guys who sell the fresh meats and vegatables.
