Description
“A Brief History of Walking in Cleveland” will discuss the role of walking in the growth and development of Cleveland, from its settlement to the present. From a small village perched on the edges where river and lake met forest, Cleveland expanded rapidly soon after, each phase of which featured a different mode of transportation, with its own role for pedestrians. With current efforts to return Cleveland to its roots as a “walking city,” or in Jeff Speck’s terms, a “Walkable City,” this look back is relevant for an understanding of how we have gotten to where we are. Bill Barrow is the Special Collections Librarian at CSU, in charge of the library’s department for local history resources, many of which are up in the Cleveland Memory Project (http://www.ClevelandMemory.org).
