The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22nd, 1970. In Cleveland, it was accompanied with a week-long spread of events and demonstrations from different groups.
Earth Day helped to propel the environmental movement into popular consciousness, and reach those in power through government. In December of 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency was established, leading to regulatory oversight which could hold industry accountable.
