Program Description

In the Spring 2022, I received a small Textbook Affordability grant for working on Adaptive Homework Assignments aiming to support students comprehension of fundamental concepts necessary for an Organic Chemistry I semester. In total, 10 adaptive assignments were created and released through Blackboard in the fall 2022. Students had unlimited attempts and several weeks for working on the assignments without faculty feedback, then several days with faculty feedback. Assignments were due the night before the first course exam. Students who successfully completed the assignments received overall a higher exam grade and a better course final letter grade than their classmates who haven't worked the assignments. Then, the overall outcome for exam 1 in fall 2022 surpasses the outcome of exam 1 for the same course in the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semester. The data highlights the importance of mastering preliminary concepts for a successful completion of challenging courses.
