The West 65th Street RTA Station serves the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood and is at the center of Cleveland EcoVillage, a nationally recognized demonstration project for sustainable development. The station and the surrounding residential neighborhood had been marred by neglect and an immediately adjacent vacant lot. Using the lot, which was in the City of Cleveland Land Bank, as a focal point The Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization proposed five interrelated projects. These included: creating a pocket park at 6009 Madison Avenue, beautifying the ravine where the tracks run, replacing the sidewalk in front of the vacant lot and the entrance to the station, beautifying the entrance to the station with native plantings and decorative fencing, and finally street edge improvements, furniture and trees throughout the site. Nicholas Wikar, Development Coordinator worked with Marous Brothers Construction to clear the site and lay new concrete. Various neighborhood volunteer groups contributed to other aspects of the project, such as planting native species and installing birdhouses. At the same time the City of Cleveland and Ohio Department of Transportation made a $2 million infrastructure investment for a new pedestrian/bike bridge that connects the station to the site. Western Reserve Land Conservatory donated trees which were planted by volunteers on Arbor Day. The site now enhances the neighborhood with aesthetically pleasing active public space including a pocket park and picnic facilities.
