This project transformed a blighted vacant lot in the Kinsman neighborhood, directly south of the 79th St RTA station into a community park. The parcel was barren except for pieces of deteriorated playground equipment and longstanding pathways worn from Minnie Street to the rapid station. The site was used to access the station in spite of its condition, but gave riders as well as residents a negative impression of Kinsman. Burton, Bell, Carr Development, Inc. worked with residents and stakeholders to identify priorities. These included improved walkability, safety, creating pride in the neighborhood and providing RTA customers with a positive view of Kinsman. Burton, Bell, Carr used these ideas as the basis for their design of the space. In summer of 2014, the land was cleared. Permanent pathways based on existed patterns were surveyed and paved, and the lot was landscaped and planted with the help of volunteers. The result is a newly created pedestrian green and park for the neighborhood and RTA riders.
