Description

This book documents the history of the sixteen Jewish cemeteries in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, using primary sources such as recorded deed transfers, records of incorporation, and plat maps to trace ownership from the time of acquisition to today. It facilitates an understanding of the correlation between each cemetery and its governance with a synagogue or benevolent organization.

Author Bio

Jeffrey S. Morris graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1974. He served in the Peace Corps from 1980 to 1982, working with rural banks in the Philippines.

He spent many years in the wholesale paper industry before joining the Jewish Family Services Association (JFSA) in 2000 as their Director of Operations. While working with the agency, he attended evening and weekend classes at Cleveland State University, earning his degree in 2003 from the Levin College of Urban Studies.

In 1996, Jeff published Beechwood the Book, detailing the transformation of Beachwood, Ohio from farmland into one of northeast Ohio’s most desirable bedroom communities. He followed this with Haymarket to the Heights (2014), which explores the movement of the Jewish community from their first house of worship in the 1840s on what is now East 9th Street to the suburbs. He attributes his research success to the knowledge he gained at the Levin College and the resources available in the Special Collections at Cleveland State University’s Michael Schwartz Library.

In 2012, Jeff volunteered to assist the City Council of Cleveland Archives classifying and documenting over 6,000 brittle files containing over 30,000 photos of buildings that once occupied Cleveland streets between 1950 and 1980. In 2013, he was honored by the City Council and Mayor Frank Jackson with a resolution in appreciation of this work.

Jeff retired from JFSA in 2021 to take on a part-time role as the Manager of Mayfield Cemetery in Cleveland Heights. This shift from a demanding 24/7 position has given him more time to pursue his passion for Cleveland's history. He strongly believes in the importance of using primary sources to ensure that future generations have accurate information.

Jeff is currently researching the development of Woodmere, Ohio, and documenting the multiple relocations of Miles Road from the city limits of Cleveland to Solon.
