Abstract

In this oral history interview, Ray Matyshyn reflects on his upbringing in the Tremont area of Cleveland, Ohio, during the 1940s and 1950s. He discusses his childhood experiences, including outdoor activities such as fishing and playing sports, as well as the close-knit, ethnically diverse community composed primarily of Eastern Europeans. Matyshyn recounts the cultural and religious influences in his family, the strong work ethic of the residents, and the pride they took in maintaining their homes and neighborhoods. He also touches on significant changes in Tremont's demographic and economic landscape over the decades, expressing mixed feelings about the area's modern development. Matyshyn's narrative provides insight into the transformation of Tremont, highlighting both the continuity of certain traditions and the displacement of the community he once knew.
