Abstract

This oral history interview with Eugene Bahniuk, conducted by Molly Nieser on November 5, 2003, captures Bahniuk's recollections of his childhood and early adulthood, focusing on his experiences growing up in the Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, during the Great Depression. Bahniuk discusses his family's move to Tremont in 1933 due to his father's job loss, their life in the neighborhood, and his schooling, which he recalls fondly for its progressive teaching methods. He also reflects on his father's work as an automobile mechanic, his own early work experiences at a gas station, and the cultural and social activities he participated in, particularly those related to the Ukrainian community.
