Abstract

In this 2025 interview, Dominique Kizer reflects on her upbringing in East Cleveland, her graduation from Shaw High School in 2009, and her undergraduate and graduate educational journey culminating at the University of Dayton's doctoral program. Kizer discusses her work teaching urban youth in New Orleans and later returning to East Cleveland City Schools to support students as a linkage coordinator and intervention specialist at Shaw High School. She describes her commitment to advocating for at-risk youth, addressing barriers to student success, and building meaningful relationships with students and families. Kizer also reflects on her work as an author and entrepreneur, including children’s books focused on Black identity, bullying, and self-esteem, as well as her advocacy against hair discrimination through support of the CROWN Act and her business centered on Black hair care and culture.
