Abstract
A soil column study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of soil in removing pollutants from septic tank septage. The flow rates ranged from 0.169 to 3.86 ml/hr while hydraulic loadings varied from 0.03 to 1.122 gpd/ft2. The soil columns removed 85.1 to 96.6% COD (chemical oxygen demand), 48.5 to 95.5% TSS (total suspended solids), and 54.2 to 95.6% VSS (volatile suspended solids) from septic tank septage.
