Abstract
A rise in solid waste generation has become an ever-increasing environmental problem in many parts of the world. Overload of solid waste can cause a lot of problems, especially to the environment and human health, such as water pollution, air and odor pollution by rotting waste, and the spread of diseases. Therefore, to overcome this problem, a good management system in handling the waste is needed. Volume reduction of waste is part of an important element in solid waste management, especially in transportation, storage, treatment, and disposal, which relate very much to the overall operation cost. Thus, in this section, the details of mechanical volume reduction involved in municipal solid waste management are discussed. These include the volume reduction technology, its advantages and limitations, on-site application, and operational and maintenance issues of the systems used.
