In his recent book, The Imperial Republic: A Structural History of American Constitutionalism from the Colonial Era to the Beginning of the Twentieth Century (Ashgate 2002), Professor Wilson discloses the quest for empire that has lain hidden in the heart of the American democracy since its founding.
