Abstract
This discussion, co-sponsored by the City Club of Cleveland, American Constitution Society, Norman S. Minor Bar Association, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law Dean’s Diversity Council and the Cleveland-Marshall Black Law Students Association, will explore the legal issues related to the recent use of deadly force by police officers. The panel will focus on the legal parameters surrounding the authorized use of deadly force by law enforcement officers, and will discuss the type of circumstances that warrant such use of deadly force. In particular, panelists will focus on the question of if the suspect was armed, and how this affects the law enforcement officer's ability to respond with force. Panelists will also comment on the grand jury process, and discuss issues of police officer potential liability in the wake of the use of deadly force.
