Program Description

Since 2020 instructors at Clemson University have used the creation of open textbooks as a strategy for educating and preparing students for careers in public health. This Lightning Talk demonstrates how this open pedagogy approach intersects with undergraduate-level healthcare education, which supports a growing occupation, and how it has transformed student learning in the subject. The presenters, a professor who has taught with the approach for over 3 years, a new instructor teaching with the strategy, a student from their courses, and a librarian who facilitated the application of open pedagogy, outline how student open textbook creation can be implemented in online, hybrid and face to face formats. Drawing on their experiences, the presenters suggest best practices on how to organize students in textbook creation, with the aim of improving their engagement and creativity in courses. They also discuss adapting the practice to graduate-level healthcare education.
