Asynchronous Pre-Recorded Lightning Talks and Viewing Discussions 2024

Constructing a Course Development Toolkit to Promote the Adoption of Affordable Course Materials and Open Pedagogy

Program Type

Lightning talks

Start Date and Time

13-5-2024 8:00 AM

Program Description

Excelsior University is an online nonprofit institution serving nontraditional students. Librarians at Excelsior have created a course development toolkit targeting faculty, subject-matter experts, instructional designers, and others to assist them in the course development and revision cycle. The purpose of the toolkit is threefold: 1) to offer ways that the library can collaborate in the course development process, 2) to empower course developers to find and utilize OER and other affordable course materials through the library, and 3) to facilitate and promote open pedagogical practices. This talk will highlight librarians’ roles in the course development cycle, how we aligned the resource with course developers’ needs, our process for developing the content, and our plan to evaluate the results. Viewers will learn how they can create a similar toolkit or adapt our toolkit to their own institution’s needs. Other takeaways include ideas for how librarians can be key partners in course development, and how they can promote open education as collaborators in the course development process.
