Asynchronous Pre-Recorded Lightning Talks and Viewing Discussions 2024

The Intersection of OER and AI: The Role of Artificial Intelligence Tools in Developing Ancillaries

Program Type

Lightning talks

Start Date and Time

13-5-2024 8:00 AM

Program Description

Open Educational Resources (OERs) have emerged as a widely embraced solution for delivering course content while addressing diverse educational needs and objectives. These resources offer advantages, including cost reduction, improved accessibility, elevated student achievement, and fostering innovative teaching practices. Yet, despite these benefits, the process of creating and customizing OERs presents its own set of challenges, particularly in sourcing high-quality ancillary materials. This challenge is amplified when OER selections span multiple different sources, complicating the task of finding supplementary materials such as test banks, presentation slides, instructional activities, and assessments, which are vital for enhancing the learning experience. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools emerge as a promising solution for faculty seeking to supplement their OER offerings. By harnessing AI (i.e., ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and Claude), educators can streamline the process of generating ancillary materials tailored to their specific educational objectives and student needs. These AI-powered tools can significantly alleviate the time and effort required for resource discovery, empowering faculty to focus more on effective teaching strategies. This presentation will explore the intersection of OER and AI, showcasing how these technologies can build quality, accessibility, and valuable instructor resources in higher education settings.
