Description
Steve Wystrach, Director, Robert Manry Project, will present “Manry at Sea: In the Wake of a Dream,” highlighting the remarkable story of the Clevelander who, in 1965, made his solo voyage across the Atlantic in his 13.5 foot sailboat, Tinkerbelle.
The presentation will include footage from Wystrach’s documentary film trailer, Tinkerbelle Sails the Atlantic, photos surrounding the epic voyage, and the tale of how one man realized his improbable dream. Following the presentation, guests can play the life-size board game "Atlantic Adventure Race Game," and peruse the Library exhibit "Adventure on the Atlantic: One Man's Voyage."
Related Exhibit
Before travel blogs, one of the ways travelers shared their experiences with friends and family was by keeping a hand-written diary or journal of their adventures. This exhibit focuses on one traveler from Willowick, Ohio who crossed the Atlantic in his 13.5 foot sailboat, Tinkerbelle, in 1965.
Robert Manry, a copy editor for the Plain Dealer, set out from Falmouth, Massachusetts on June 1, 1965. He kept a logbook of his solo journey to Falmouth, England and arrived on August 17, 1965. At the time, the Tinkerbelle was the smallest boat to cross the Atlantic.
Manry's book about his adventure, excerpts from his logbook, a video filmed and narrated by Manry and memorabilia celebrating his epic voyage is on display in Cleveland State University's Michael Schwartz Library.
