A Day of Asian Books, Part 1 - An Octavofest Keynote Event

Jim Canary, Tibetan scholar and book conservator at the Lilly Rare Books Library of Indiana University, presents an illustrated talk on the history of books in Asia, the challenges of conserving ancient documents, and modern efforts to preserve and revitalize the traditions of book and papermaking.

2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Jim Canary continues his program by demonstrating printing techniques with 100-year-old carved woodblocks. Audience members can see and handle samples of handmade Tibetan paper and copies of books in various styles, then participate by trying out the techniques themselves with hands-on guidance.
