Abstract
Voting rights have been much in the news lately, with some state legislatures moving to change how voting happens and ultimately who votes. Meanwhile, Congress has (so far) failed to pass proposed major legislation that is aimed at standardizing voting and guaranteeing voting rights across the nation. The use of Geographic Information Systems technology plays an important role in how elections are carried out and whether our democratic principles are sustained. In important ways, depending on the state or local jurisdiction, partisan interests of both major political parties have undermined those principles. Let’s examine two ways in which GIS plays a role.
