Abstract
An essay is presented describing the author's experiences using ethnic fiction as a tool within his curriculum for U.S. history. The author particularly highlights a unit on labor history in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the turn of the 20th century and cites the novel "Out of This Furnace," by Thomas Bell, as an effective account relating the experiences of immigrant industrial workers at the beginning of the labor organization movement.
