Camp Mueller

Camp Mueller was one of the nation’s first and among its few African American summer camps, located south of Peninsula in what is now the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Operated by the Phillis Wheatley Association in Cleveland, the camp opened in 1941 and initially served only girls. Interviews in this collection focus on the recollections of former campers and staff at Camp Mueller. The first ten interviews in this collection were conducted in 2010 by faculty and students in cooperation with the Phillis Wheatley Association. Additional interviews followed in the mid-2020s as part of the Green Book Cleveland collaboration between CSU and Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
