Abstract

Discharge of patients with schizophrenia from mental-health-hospital units without prior assessment of their competence to make informed medical decisions is a problem in the USA and beyond. Upon discharge, patients with schizophrenia and anosognosia are left on their own without capability to know that they have a disease that reduces brain tissue.
