Abstract
This study examined the mediating role of conformity to male and female gender norms in the relationship between sexual orientation and self-objectification in a sample of gay and heterosexual men. Path analyses supported the tenants of objectification theory with the sample, as well as the previously substantiated relationship between gay/non-traditional sexual orientation and self-objectification and eating disorder risk. Contrary to previous findings, sexual orientation was not significantly related to higher levels of body dissatisfaction and body shame. Furthermore, neither conformity to male norms nor conformity to female norms mediated the relationship between sexual orientation and self-objectification as hypothesized.
