Abstract
Black male youth face several challenges in their development of a positive identity. This study examines the effectiveness of a curriculum, P.R.I.D.E., designed to promote positive gendered-racial identity development and critical consciousness among African American male youth. The curriculum is designed to counteract systemic barriers that impair identity development and enhance critical reflection. African American male youth (n=21) between the ages of 11-14 participated in a 6-week intervention. Preliminary research from an ongoing study examining the effectiveness of the intervention on outcomes such as racial identity, critical consciousness, collective self-esteem, stereotypical roles, and civic engagement are presented.
