Alison C. Essary, Arizona State University

Dr. Essary serves as Director of Student Affairs for the College of Health Solutions and Clinical Associate Professor in the School for the Science of Health Care Delivery at Arizona State University (ASU). As Director of Student Affairs, Dr. Essary’s responsibilities include implementing student admissions and retention strategies and ensuring high-quality student engagement programs for over 5,500 students in the College of Health Solutions.

In the School for the Science of Health Care Delivery, Dr. Essary teaches graduate-level coursework in leadership and professionalism, and the U.S. health care system.

Her research interests encompass health services research, including development of a representative health workforce development, and the provision of accessible, high-quality, patient-centered health care. In 2011, she served as PI for the HRSA Primary Care Training and Enhancement Program, Addressing PA Primary Care Workforce Shortages through Community Outreach and Faculty Development. In 2014, she served as a committee member to develop Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Integration of Oral Health and Primary Care Practice recommendations. She currently serves as the ASU PI for the NIH-funded BUILDing SCHOLARS program (Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity: Southwest Consortium of Health-Oriented education Leaders and Research Scholars).

In 2013, she was granted the Breitman-Dorn Fellowship in recognition of her research efforts. Dr. Essary serves as Chair, General Studies Council at Arizona State University, and represents the College of Health Solutions on the Graduate Dean’s Advisory Council, the Service Excellence Initiative and the Undergraduate Enrollment Planning Team. On a national level, she serves as a committee member for Collaborating across Borders (CAB), a scientific reviewer for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), grant review committee member for HRSA, and department editor for the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. She has held leadership positions with both the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), and the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA). She holds a joint appointment as Clinical Associate Professor with the Northern Arizona University Department of Physician Studies.

Stephen Biscotte, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

Stephen Biscotte is the Coordinator for General Education, a full-time administrative faculty position in the Office of the Provost, at Virginia Tech. His primary responsibilities include communication, faculty development, and student engagement to support implementation of the new Pathways General Education curriculum. Biscotte is currently a doctoral candidate in Educational Psychology: Curriculum and Instruction and has over a decade of prior secondary science teaching experience. His research focuses on improving the student experience in the undergraduate general education science classroom.

Abstract

This is a panel presentation on General Education plans at three universities that are known for their leadership in undergraduate education. We will hear brief presentations from Yves Labissiere of Portland State University, Alison Essary of Arizona State University and Stephen Biscotte of Virginia Tech. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss what they have learned and to ask questions.
