Abstract
While therapists encourage clients to engage in wellness activities, how often do therapists take their own advice and what impact does their personal life have on their practice? In a study of 189 pre-doctoral interns, the relationship between self-care and competence was explored. Engagement in self-care significantly predicted levels of competence, b=.23, t(164)=4.20, pr=.24), presenting research (r=.30), receiving professional awards (r=.16), and committee service (r=.28). Implications for practice will be discussed with respect to the developing literature on competence and self-care.
