This collection arose from Green Book Cleveland, a digital history project developed at Cleveland State University in partnership with Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Green Book Cleveland maps and documents historical sites of Black leisure, recreation, and entertainment in Northeast Ohio, with particular attention to the era and legacy of the Green Book guides for African American travelers. The interviews in this series document Black memories and perspectives on leisure, music, entertainment, neighborhood life, cultural institutions, preservation, public history, and community change in Cleveland, Akron, and the Cuyahoga Valley. Topics include jazz music, entertainment districts such as Cleveland’s East 105th Street and Akron’s Howard Street, neighborhood life in Cleveland’s Central, Glenville, and Lee-Harvard areas, and cultural organizations and productions such as The Black Experience at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, Larchmere Arts, the Lee-Harvard Memorial Project, the Rubber City Jazz & Blues Festival, and more.
